John Island Redevelopment *NEW! Take a look at our slideshow displaying Redevelopment progress at John Island Camp: For more than half a century, YMCA John Island Camp has woven its magic spell on generations of children and their parents. The summers of our youth spent learning, laughing and growing have become the cherished memories of adulthood. Now, John Island Camp needs your support so that it continues to be an important part of so many lives. Give So That Future Generations May Share the Treasure Now in its 57th year, John Island Camp is a children’s residential summer camp located on John Island in the North Channel of Lake Huron. Facilities such as camper Where is the Money Going? The dollars raised in the “Share the Treasure” campaign are being used to renovate and replace the buildings and facilities at John Island over the next five years. Many camper cabins built in the 50’s are being replaced and renovated. More efficient and private toilets and showers are now built and in operation.
During the Summer of 2009, the old kitchen was completely removed and transformed, opening it up into more dining space. An extension on the West end of the dining was completed and the new kitchen began serving food to campers in July. and staff cabins, shower facilities, outhouses, dining hall and equipment are starting to age. Our “Share the Treasure” campaign goal has been set at $895,000 to cover the cost of these renovations.
During the Fall of 2009, "new" Ivy was built. This was the 2nd new cabin on the girl's side of camp, accompanying the 5 new (and 1 restored) cabin on the boys side. Our plan for Spring 2010 is to continue on the girl's side of camp and build the "new" Aird cabin. In the future, other girl's cabins will be restored to give an equal feel to the reconstruction of John Island.
